Britesign

Cooper Lighting and Safety has expanded its range of exit signs with the introduction of the Menvier Britesign, which utilises high-intensity LEDs to provide unrivalled legend clarity and a light source life of at least 50,000 hours, up to 10 times longer than conventional 8W lamps.

This long life dramatically reduces the disruption caused by the frequent lamp changes needed for conventional fluorescent exit signs when used in maintained mode, resulting in outstanding savings in both lamp replacement and labour costs.

Britesign has an ultra slim profile of only 50mm and also has a significant threshold downlight feature. The legend assembly is available in a choice of colour finishes.

New fire handbook outlines latest legislation

Cooper Lighting and Safety has launched a new fire handbook that is sure to be a valuable source of information for anyone involved in designing, specifying or installing fire detection systems.

Entitled 'Fire Solutions', the 160-page A4 full-colour handbook includes a useful fire system design guide, which details the requirements of the latest legislation and standards, as well as providing guidance on system design and product selection.

In addition, the handbook features all the fire systems and components supplied by the company under its Menvier and JSB brands, divided into four sections covering analogue control panels, analogue interfaces, conventional fire panels, and fire system components such as detectors, callpoints, sounders and beacons.

Each section has its own contents page with thumbnail photographs to facilitate product selection, and each product entry consists of a photograph, a brief description, a list of key features, detailed technical specifications, installation notes, dimensioned line diagrams and ordering information.

COOPER SECURITY STATEMENT - EN50131

In September the period of 'dual running', when intruder alarm systems may still be installed to BS4737, comes to an end.

We have various alarm panels under test which will be suitable for use in PD6662:2004 systems. Unfortunately the documents on which PD6662:2004 compliance is based contain contradictions and inconsistencies and further clarification is necessary. The agreed resolution of these issues is set out in a BSIA document known as Form 171: 'Guidelines for the use of the PD6662:2004 scheme for the implementation of prEN50131-1:2004'. This is currently available at Issue 1 on the BSIA web site.

A meeting between manufacturers, inspectorates and insurers was held under the auspices of the BSIA on 31st March 2005. Chaired by our Technical Director, the purpose of the meeting was to agree Issue 2 of Form 171, which clears up further issues that have arisen since Issue 1 was agreed. Some of these will entail further changes to alarm panel software in the interests of creating a tenable situation for users and installers. The revised Issue 2 document is now on internal circulation for approval and is expected to be available from BSIA by the end of April 2005. Whilst primarily intended for use by manufacturers in the provision of compliant equipment, it is also a very useful source of information for installers who would like a better understanding of why a particular piece of equipment will or will not be compliant.

The agreement and release of Form 171 Issue 2 will clear up most outstanding panel design matters, but as things currently stand it will still not be possible to install a PD6662:2004 compliant communicating system. This is because PD6662 includes two requirements that cannot currently be met. The first is that: Sub-clause 6.2 of PD 6662: 2004 states: "Any claim that the scheme described in PD 6662 has been followed should [i.e. shall] state that the intruder and hold-up alarm system conforms to PD 6662: 2004, for a grade 1, 2, 3 or 4 system, with notification option A, B, C, D or X." It is not known whether this information will be available to installers, so it is unclear how they can supply it. A further meeting has been arranged on 11th April to try to find a way out of this. The second is the availability of dual path communicators that can meet the requirement to signal whether a comms failure affects one path or both. A new serial comms interface has been agreed that will enable communicators to convey this information to alarm panels but it is not known when alarm transmission equipment will be available for testing with panels that incorporate this feature.

So there is still much work to be done. In the meantime, if you are offered an alarm panel 'suitable for use with PD6662:2004 systems' (and remember that any other claim is irrelevant) the probability is that compliance is not complete.

We will not be releasing PD6662:2004 compliant alarm panels until all the unresolved issues have been dealt with. To do so would be to run a high risk that the equipment would have to be upgraded or replaced in the coming months as the requirements continue to change and this is not in the interests of our customers or anyone else.
